The main legislation on procedure for administration of substantive criminal law in India. Replaced by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in 2024.

The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 regulates the machinery for investigation of crime, apprehension of suspected criminals, collection of evidence, determination of guilt or innocence of the accused person, and the determination of punishment. It was replaced by the BNSS in 2024.

This law has been recently superseded or amended in the India legal system (e.g. IPC replaced by Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2024). Verify if your case falls under the old Penal Code or the new Sanhita.
